Any of the different NFP methods (Billings, Couple to Couple League, Creighton, Marquette Model or SymptoPro) will fullfill your pre-marriage NFP requirement.
Billings Ovulation Method
The Billings Ovulation Method is a simple, scientific method for understanding and interpreting a woman’s fertility. This method tracks a woman’s natural and unique signs of fertility and infertility each day based on observation of sensation as well as cervical mucus. Patterns of fertility and infertility are identified and four simple rules are applied within the woman’s cycle based on the couple’s desire to achieve or postpone pregnancy.
What can you expect at the class?
The Billings Ovulation Method is taught in one session that is offered in a class format. At the class, you will learn an introduction of the method, how to understand and interpret your fertility, and charting basics. After the class, there will be three additional individual follow-ups scheduled with a certified Billings Ovulation Method Instructor. During these follow-ups, the instructor will guide you in understanding your individual fertility and recognizing patterns of fertility and infertility. Additional follow-ups after the initial two may be scheduled upon request and are offered throughout a woman’s reproductive years.
Cost of Class
The cost of the class is a one-time fee of $150, which includes the initial class session and three individual follow-ups. It also includes the materials for the class – charting supplies, stamps, and an instructional manual.
Find classes being offered on the calendar at the bottom of the main NFP page.
Some of our Billings instructors prefer the introductory class in an individual setting at this time; if you do not see a class scheduled on the calendar, feel free to contact the individual instructors for their availability, or contact Christie Collins at firstname.lastname@example.org or 864-354-5046.
Teresa & Devin Steele (Beach)
After we went through our first NFP course, Devin and I were amazed by how much we learned and how much we didn't know going into the class. Devin and I learned a new found respect for the human body, and the gift of life which God so graciously gives. I remember discussing with Devin how our world today tends to look at fertility as a disease or burden for couples instead of the gift God intended fertility to be. The world tells us, "take this pill, fix the problem" or "get the shot, fix the problem", and the list can go on with numerous other forms of contraception. On the other hand, natural family planning teaches couples about a women's natural signs of fertility. There are no chemicals or side effects from practicing NFP. We asked each other, "Why don't more people know about NFP?" Not only that, but Devin and I could not wait to tell our friends and family about what we learned. As a result, we decided to become teachers in the Billings Ovulation Method so that we could teach our friends and family about NFP and bring NFP to the very western edge of North Dakota. Devin and I are excited to be able to teach NFP in our hometown of Beach, ND and the surrounding areas. As for what we love about NFP, well that would be another three paragraphs in the making. So in simple terms, we love NFP because it will allow us to reach our full potential as future husband and wife together. Devin and I can already see how NFP has nurtured our relationship and brought us closer as an engaged couple. Marriage is another chapter, and we truly believe God and NFP will help us through the joys and challenges of it all.

Tara Brooke (Bismarck)
I truly began the journey of wanting to teach NFP over 8 years before I finally took a course to become an instructor. From the moment my husband and I sat in our first NFP class (18 months after we were married) we were sold on this being the only method of family planning we ever wanted to use in our marriage. I had been told by doctors for years that I needed to be on the birth control pill for medical reasons and had blindly been taking birth control for over 10 years. After the first class we had a clear understanding of my fertility and found ways to cope with the medical conditions I had, rather than blanket them with the birth control pill. 8 years later our family life allowed me the time to take the training and become an instructor.
I love NFP because it has richly blessed my marriage. My husband and I are better people for using NFP. The church has wisdom in saying this is the only approved method of family planning as it forces couples to communicate each month about their family plan. The greatest gift we have noticed is that it put both, my husband and I, on the same team and increased the trust we have in each other in regards to our intimate relationship.
The beauty of NFP is that it can and does work for everybody!

Abbey Nagel (Bismarck)
We began teaching NFP because we knew that it would soon be a Diocesan-wide requirement for marriage prep, and as we are confident that this is a good thing for young couples, we wanted to help spread the message and familiarize others with NFP and the Billings Method. NFP has been a blessing in our marriage and we are confident that it helps to build happy, holy marriages, which is what we love about it! With contraception being so popular and culturally accepted in our world, we feel strongly that we needed to step up to the plate and preach the good news of being open to the will of God and embracing His plan of natural fertility. Ultimately, we hope that our class will draw others into the beauty of receiving God’s plan for their families and their lives. We look forward to meeting many wonderful couples along the way!

Jill Gruman (Bismarck)
I began teaching Natural Family Planning because it is truly the best treasure in God’s beautiful design for marriage! There is an endless outpouring of blessings that come from practicing NFP in a marriage. As my husband and I started to share the fruits of NFP in our marriage with others around us, we were overwhelmed with gratitude from so many couples that were desiring to understand the gift of fertility. NFP offers marriage the beauty of discerning God’s will for planning a family as well as medically accurate information on understanding a woman’s fertility.

Diane Miller (Bowman)
I wanted to start teaching NFP because I truly believe in the benefits it has to offer. Not only can it be a tool in monitoring womens health, but it can also be a great way to bring a couple closer together in their marriage. NFP can give the husband an even greater respect for his wife and their fertility as a couple. I feel that women deserve to learn more about their fertility and understand that it is a gift and not something that needs to be treated as a disease. The Billings Ovulation Method has a lot of continuing research behind it and does a great job at teaching NFP in the simplest way that ensures that the woman or couple understands.

Jessina Kary (Dickinson)
I teach the Billings Ovulation Method. This Method focuses on monitoring a woman's natural signs to chart her fertility.
I began teaching when I was approached by the instructor who taught my husband and I when we were engaged. I love meeting all the young couples who are sincerely interested in learning this method and using it throughout their lives. However, I also enjoy teaching couples who are only taking the class because their parish priest requires it of them. I like to think that I am still planting a seed that might be useful to them down the road.

Sarah Poswilko (Dickinson)
I teach NFP because I want to help couples in the vocation of marriage. I chose the Billings Ovulation Method because my husband and I learned it as we prepared for marriage. The Billings Ovulation Method is thoroughly researched and highly effective. It is easy to learn and inexpensive to use. Most importantly, it brings a husband and wife into closer communication with God and each other.
I love the fact that NFP can be used to postpone or achieve pregnancy. Many couples cannot predict if they will struggle to achieve pregnancy until they actually experience it. When couples use NFP to recognize fertility, it can help them achieve pregnancy naturally. NFP can also be used to monitor female reproductive health. I encourage all couples to learn NFP for their marriage, their health, and their faith.

Shawna Helbling (Mandan)
My husband and I were introduced to Natural Family Planning by some friends during our marriage preparations. We have found it very useful in helping us plan our family, especially during our time of infertility. Through prayer and monthly communication, we have been able to plan and discern what is best of our family. We have found Natural Family Planning very rewarding in our marriage.
I am excited to teach Natural Family Planning for the Diocese of Bismarck. Through my own personal experience and training, I am able to help couples choose this method of planning their own families. I look forward to giving couples the tools to practice Natural Family Planning in their marriages.

Allison Suda (Minot)
Science and research have always been an interest of mine. This passion combined with my love for the Catholic Church and all that she teaches has lead me right to the door of Natural Family Planning. I began learning specifically about the methods of NFP in college as well as the sacred responsibility that comes with the vocation of marriage. It has been a great journey learning about my body and the wonderful and intricate ways that God has made all of us. We are truly blessed and I am happy to serve others by sharing this great knowledge. I look forward to working with couples and single people from all walks of life and provide them with the tools they need to live a healthy and happy life!"

Katie Vidmar (Mott)
We began teaching Natural Family Planning because we believe it is a gift that is too good not to share! In learning about our God-given nature as men and women, we not only offer a form of family planning that poses no threat to a woman’s sexual health, but that can also set us free to love and be loved in the way that matches our most authentic desires. This is what NFP is all about!

Katie Monson (Williston)
Natural family planning is a beautiful way for married couples to grow in intimacy as they discuss their combined fertility and how to work with it. We love NFP because it allows us to work with God’s design rather than against it. NFP helps us to give ourselves more intimately to each other because we are fully aware of the creative power of the marital embrace. As instructors of the Billings Ovulation Method, we enjoy bringing couples to greater admiration of each other and our Creator.
