Any of the different NFP methods (Billings, Couple to Couple League, Creighton, Marquette, or SymptoPro) will fulfill your pre-marriage requirement. You MUST take a class with a certified instructor of the method: ONLINE and LIVE ONLINE classes are NOT permitted at this time to fulfill the requirement.
Find classes being offered on the calendar at the bottom of the main NFP page.
What method do you teach?
Natural Family Planning is a research-based, hormone-free, parish-approved method of determining your family intentions. We teach the Sympto-Thermal method, which combines the mucus pattern (the "sympto" part) and the temperature (the "thermal" part) to cross-check changes in a woman’s fertility. Up to 99 percent effective, the Sympto-Thermal method involves observing changes in the woman's mucus, vaginal sensations and (optionally) the cervix. The temperature pattern is observed by taking the woman's daily resting temperature. These observable signs change in response to the hormones of the monthly menstrual cycle. The benefits of cross-checking the mucus, sensation and temperature patterns are numerous; especially if one of these observations is disturbed.
One of the unique benefits this method provides is it verifies that ovulation has occurred through the sustained temperature rise. This information is especially helpful for couples who are struggling with infertility. An additional strength of this method includes the personalized, free support that each couple receives. Each couple is paired with a trained instructor to answer questions, check their understanding of the rules, and review their personalized charts. Educated through SymptoPro™ Fertility in Portland, Ore., we have been trained to handle special circumstances including postpartum, perimenopause, and coming off of hormonal birth control.
It only takes seconds a day for a woman to track her fertility; then the couple interprets the information charted and makes a decision to achieve or abstain, based on their family planning intention. SymptoPro™ works through periodic abstinence during the method-defined fertile time for couples who wish to avoid a pregnancy.
How do you format your class series? What can participants expect from your classes?
Each class series consists of three interactive two-hour classes that meet over the course of one month with personalized follow-up. A fourth private follow-up is scheduled after completion of the course, along with free, indefinite chart review. The classes consist of power point instruction and hands-on activities to learn and apply the information. Participants learn a tremendous amount of information at each class, and the six-week schedule gives them time to learn and internalize the information, and establish the habit of charting. Participants chart for six weeks starting the day after the first class; during this time, we are able to see that they understand what they are doing, or correct misunderstandings before the end of the series. After the series is complete, we encourage participants to continue sharing their charts and receiving feedback, until we feel confident the couple knows and understands the rules, and can effectively apply them to their charts.
The benefits to this approach include face-to-face instruction, the opportunity to ask questions both of your instructor and of other couples in attendance, and receive personalized feedback after the series has ended. You will not be asked to share personal information with class participants.
What is the cost of your class?
The registration fee is $135.00 per couple. The fee includes the cost of materials, a one-year subscription to the Stepping Stones newsletter, and expenses incurred for the class instruction. The cost includes lifetime support at no extra charge.
Carmen Devney (Bismarck)
My husband and I waited until we were in our '30s to start a family. Because we were older, we chose to study and use NFP to take the guess-work out of when to achieve a pregnancy. It was only after we identified the miscarriage of our first pregnancy by charting that we learned just how important my charts would be in identifying cycle deficiencies. We have now used NFP for about 10 years. In that time, NFP has helped us identify a pregnancy faster than a store-purchased home pregnancy test. It later helped me identify my secondary infertility. It will forever help us communicate, respect each other, follow God's intentions for us, and grow together as a couple. From knowing when to abstain or achieve a pregnancy, to identifying cycle deficiencies and learning when to expect a menstrual cycle, there are so many emotional and physical benefits to NFP. I encourage you to give a try, and look forward to teaching you what've come to know and value about NFP.
