To begin our discussion, Fr. Robert Shea led us through a series of talks concerning the aspect of human dignity based off of the encyclical Gospel of Life, written by St. John Paul the Great. He shed light on how Christianity created and impacted the modern-day hospital. Drawing from a talk given by Michael Aquilina at the CMA in 2015, Father also touched on Aquilina’s healing imperative. We then were taken through the idea of projected dignity: what it means, what it looks like in everyday life, and how we as healthcare professionals can benefit from understanding the role projected dignity plays in our patients’ lives. Finally, Fr. Shea tied all the topics together together with Mary the Mother of God. Mary is humanity healed and she fulfills what God desires for us all – to be healed physically and spiritually.
We would like to thank Fr. Robert Shea for sharing with us his wisdom and time. He truly is a gift to the Catholic Physician’s Guild and we are very fortunate to have such a dedicated priest to educate and serve the members of the Guild. Words cannot express our gratitude and we look forward to many other opportunities to learn from Fr. Shea.
